Candidates Decry New JAMB Admissions Policy, Threatens Court Action

Candidates of the Joint Admission And Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination trooped to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) campus on Tuesday afternoon to protest against the management of the institution and the registrar of JAMB, Professor Dibu Ojerinde.
JAMB 2015 UTME
The students, who were already preparing to sit for post-JAMB tests in UNILAG expressed shock at discovering their institutions of choice had been arbitrarily changed in their candidate records without their consent, and they called for the matter to be probed, and Professor Ojerinde removed.
The protesters explained that JAMB’s action has randomly distributed them to schools they did not choose, and is forcing them into random schools against their individual wishes.
The protesters included the affected candidates, who said their records of choice schools have been arbitrarily altered by JAMB, some parents and legal practitioners, who have threatened to bring legal action against the Board.
They also criticized the University of Lagos, which raised the cut-off score for qualifying to take its post-JAMB test, accusing the institution of arbitrarily changing JAMB’s cut-off score to dictate its own.
“JAMB said it is 180,” one of the affected candidates explained. “Even if UNILAG said it wants 200, it might be understandable, but what is 250?”
One of the parents who came to the protest pointed out that his had repeated the JAMB test for the third year because he only wants to attend UNILAG.
“He rejected an offer from another institution in the last year’s season. How then can JAMB suddenly change his choice institution when he’s about to take post-JAMB test again in UNILAG?” he asked.
Asked another parent, “How can JAMB by its own decision change my daughter’s school to Maiduguri where [Boko Haram leader] Shekau will probably be the VC?”
An activist who led the students in the protest, Dr. Kayode Owolabi, threatened to sue JAMB over the action. He accused the Board of deceiving and defrauding the students over sales of “Change of Institution and Course forms” only to later disregard their choices and distribute them randomly into schools they did not choose.
“I opened my record online and found a notice that my institution of choice has been changed by, single-handedly by JAMB,” one of the candidates explained.

NUC Cautions Nigerians Against Patronising Online Varsities

The National Universities Commission, NUC, on Thursday called on Nigerians to stop patronising online universities and other degree awarding institutions operating online.
NUC-Logo.jpg
Speaking at a press conference, the NUC’s Public Relations officer, Ibrahim Yakasai, said that degrees obtained online are not accepted in the country.
“Nigeria will not recognize online degrees. Online degrees are not accepted in Nigeria at the moment,” he said.
Mr. Yakasai warned Nigerian students and parents against patronising Maryam Abacha American University in Niger Republic.
“We wish to restate that as the only quality assurance agency for universities in Nigeria, the NUC is maintaining its stand that degrees from Maryam Abacha University will not be accepted in Nigeria” he said
He noted that the Commission has been inundated with enquiries from some Nigerian students who had been offered admission to the university.
He said the concerned students were offered admissions on part-time basis with a graduation time of four semesters for programmes like Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Public Health among others.
Mr.Yakasai explained that in Nigeria the duration for a fulltime degree programme is not less than three years for direct entry and at least six years for part-time.
He said professional programmes in Science, Engineering and Health Sciences including Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science and Public Health are not offered on part-time basis in Nigeria.
He added that all part- time cross border education in Nigeria are not allowed.
Mr. Yakasai said the Maryam Abacha University admits Nigerian students who do not have the basic requirements to gain admission into the nation’s tertiary institutions in addition to running courses such as Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science on part-time basis which, according to him, is not acceptable.
Mr. Yakasai said all countries are at liberty to accept any qualification they wish to.
Many Nigerians enroll annually in online schools based in the United States and the United Kingdom, and other countries.

JAMB New Policy: Universities Can Go Beyond Cut Off Mark Of 180

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said that the national cut off point for screening of candidates for admission remained the minimum expectation that each candidate desirous of university admission should have. This is contained in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the board, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made available to newsmen on Wednesday in Lagos.
JAMB 2015 UTME
Read: JAMB New Admission Policy
According to the statement, the attention of the board has been drawn to the challenge experienced by some candidates who could not access the University of Lagos site to register for the Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The statement said that the board sincerely sympathised with their frustration.
“We want to seize this opportunity to state that our attention has been drawn to the agitation by some parents and students who turned out for the registration for the post JAMB screening exercise for the candidates. “We sympathise with them but wish to state categorically that the national cut off point is just the minimum expectation that each candidate desirous of university admission should have
“However, universities are at liberty to go higher than 180, depending on their peculiarities and the performance of candidates who chose them.
“For instance, if over 10,000 candidates who made Unilag their first choice scored 250 and above, it will be difficult for them to go lower than 250 when they are to admit only about 7000.
“I wish to state that a time will come when some universities will go up to 300 as their cut off mark, depending on the performance,’’ the statement said.
It explained that because of the development, the board decided that some of the candidates who chose such institutions but fall below their cut off marks should not miss out, hence the need to send them to other schools.
The statement added that such a gesture should rather be applauded, instead of condemning the Dibu Ojerinde-led JAMB management.

UNIABUJA Gets NUC Accreditation For Agriculture, Engineering and Vet. Medicine Programmes

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Abuja (UniAbuja), Prof. Michael Adikwu, said the institution now has full accreditation to offer courses in Agriculture, Engineering and Veterinary Medicine.
UNIABUJA Logo
Adikwu disclosed this at a Forum of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday.
He said that the initial accreditation challenge experienced by the institution had been overcome.
“Let me start with agriculture. That was one of the courses that were problematic; we have full accreditation for that now; so we don’t have problem in that area,’’ he said.
“Before I came on board, there was also a problem with engineering; some of the students were farmed out, sent to other universities.
“So, they (the university) had some contact with them and there were few courses they needed to come back and complete and that has been done, and we have graduated two sets put together.
‘’So, we do not have problem with that currently,’’ he said.
On veterinary medicine, Adikwu said that the issue with the course had been sorted out and that the department had started graduating students.
He said that the only department in the university yet to be accredited was medicine, adding that it was being expected.
“They have had the first accreditation; they were successful.
“For medicine, you have to do serial accreditations; they needed to do one for the basic clinical sciences and then the final accreditation.
“So, we are preparing for that and very soon, they too will cross the fence,” he explained.
He said that the university had acquired the basic infrastructure needed for teaching medical students, adding that the institution presently had three sets of students ready for graduation.
The vice chancellor disclosed that the university recently lost its accreditation for law and microbiology programmes because it overshot its admission quota.
He explained that the loss of accreditation for the courses could only stop the university from admitting fresh students for them, adding, however, that the matter would be resolved soon.
He said that the loss of accreditation for law was because the number of students admitted for the programme was high.
According to him, the Council for Legal Education said we should admit 100 students but we were admitting more than 400.
“I know of some other universities which are taking 700 students and they also lost accreditation. Once that is corrected, we will get our accreditation back,’’ Adikwu said.
“We also do not have accreditation for microbiology; I do not think that it is punitive; I think that it is corrective.
“Once the number of our students normalises, we will get our accreditation back,” he stated.
The vice-chancellor, however, said that the corrective measure would not affect the students currently in the law and microbiology programmes, stating that they would graduate soon.
According to him, ”our Faculty of Law is doing very well as it has performed wonderfully in both local and international completions.”

Why The New JAMB Admission Policy Is Not As Bad As It Seems

Like we promised, we have been following the new jamb admission policy and have been trying to ascertain the rationale and criteria used by JAMB in determining the eligibility of candidates to participate in their choice schools' post-UTME this year.

Our findings have shown that the policy may not really be as bad as it seems.

JAMB arrived at this new policy basically by considering the number of candidates that applied for the courses approved by NUC in the various schools and the number of applicants per institution.

For instance, statistics has it that, a whopping 607,330 candidates applied to study just in the top ten universities.

This only implies that the carrying capacities of these universities have been outweighed by the number of applicants.

In other to give such candidates that may not be absorbed by these universities opportunity of gaining admission this year, there is need to re-distribute these candidates to other universities that have less than their carrying capacities based on scores and catchment areas.

The import of this is that only the top scorers (say about 20%) in a particular course may be considered eligible to participate in the Post-UTME of their choice institutions. Especially in those institutions that have more candidates than their carrying capacities could contain.

So for candidates who scored the required cut-off mark and yet not eligible to participate in their schools’ post-UTME you may need to consider the following;

1.The probability that you are in the top 20% in your chosen course.

2.If your choice in institution is under your state’s catchment.

So it can be deduced that the main aim for this new admission policy is to balance the admission process. In order to create an almost balanced platform for candidates which will give them a better chance of gaining admission this year.

This is because if JAMB was to go with the status quo, the admission will be partial and greatly tilted to one side and will also disfavour many.

The affected candidates like we gathered will soon be notified by JAMB on what to do next.

Affected By The New JAMB Admission Policy? Please Read This!

With the current out burst and agitations from students following the implementation of the new admission policy (Eligibility Regulation), we have decided to delve in and ascertain the rationale and criteria used by JAMB to disqualify some candidates from participating in the post-UTME screening of their respective choice institutions.

So far JAMB has not released any official statement to clear the air and affected candidates are at a loss concerning what to do next.

If you have been unable to register for your schools' post-UTME due to this policy, please kindly state your school of choice, UTME score and the course you applied for in the comment box below. No need to state your JAMB Registration Number.

We are currently following this up and will inform you of any new development.

If you are affected by this new policy, comment now using the comment box below.

NANS Rejects JAMB New Admission Policy (Eligibility Regulation) Calls for Immediate Reversal

The National Association Of Nigerian Students south west zone has called for immediate reversal of the new admission policy (Eligibility Regulation).

According to a statement issued by the General Secretary and Public Relations Officer Zone D, Comr. Obanobi Bidemi and Comr. Olatinwo Jeremiah, the association describes this new policy as fraudulent.

The statement reads," Over 40 million Nigerian students at home and in diaspora want the JAMB registrar to define the word “CHOICE of INSTITUTION”. Why would I be posted to a school I never applied for? Why would I be posted to a school above my parents’/sponsors’ means.

“We saw this trend coming from last year when the myopic board reduced the options of institution of choice from six to three claiming it is to save students from the fraudulent activities of tertiary institutions in the process of admitting students.

“We call on the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to begin a probe into the accounts of the admission board, its registrar and top echeleon as it has been paid by proprietors of private tertiary institutions hence the bastardization of the admission exercise – a great semblance to the scandal that rocked the world football governing body, FIFA,” it said.

The statement also warns that the over 5 million students across the 6 states of the South West, including affected students, would be mobilised to the JAMB office if the policy was not reversed immediately.

What You Need To Know About The JAMB New Admission Policy (Eligibility Regulation)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) at its 2015 Combined Policy Meeting, held on July 14, 2015 in Abuja, announced the adoption of a policy whereby candidates of universities with surplus applicants for the Unified Matriculation Examinations (UTME) are reassigned to other universities with lower number of candidates than their capacities.

According to the Registrar/CEO of JAMB, Professor Dibu Ojerinde, the policy portends two benefits:

It will be beneficial to “needy Universities” that is universities with lower number of candidates than their capacities, as this will ensure that these universities will have more candidates to admit.

Candidates will have better chances for admission in the universities they are re-assigned to, contrary to situations where they would await admission in the universities of their first choices until the admission exercise closes and they forfeit admission in that session.

This policy has been implemented with immediate effect. And is currently being used to determine eligibility of candidates to write the Post-UTME in their respective choice institutions.

New Policy: JAMB, to notify candidates of new school/course selection - JAMB Staff

A preliminary investigation carried out by Easthood Careers, through a JAMB Staff, has revealed that the board will notify candidates of the new school/course they will be posted, to adopt the new policy of candidate distribution.

According to the JAMB Staff, "Some of the candidates who scored more than 200 and are being rejected for some courses, happened based on the individual cut-off marks set by the institution for those particular courses. In summary too many students applied for those courses and the University can only admit a fraction of the candidates who applied. JAMB will therefore notify candidates of appropriate Universities/Course they can apply for."

It is therefore our deduction that these rejected candidates will be sent to study the same courses in other Universities of lesser competition. This policy also ensures that best candidates in the country are admitted, even if it means posting them to other institutions.

The new policy to evenly distribute candidates by JAMB has met heavy criticism based on the fact that forms were sold for candidates to Change their Course/Institution. If JAMB knew they would effect such a policy, they should never have sold Change of Course/institution forms. This makes us believe that it is quite possible that Change of Course/institution Candidates will get preferential treatment in this new policy.
